Chapter 5

Later that evening

Everette

“Are you sure you’re alright?” I ask Maxim for the millionth time.

“Yes.” Great, now he’s the one with the one-word replies.

I was excited for tonight despite all the conflicting thoughts pounding in my head. I had decided to take Bo’s advice and make my move. Even if his win-win scenario isn’t entirely accurate, I’ll still get to know what Maxim is hiding inside of those tight jeans of his. But instead of having crazy flour-covered sex on the kitchen floor—which I’d definitely regret later, ’cause…eww unsanitary—I’m wading through a virtual minefield.

Maxim is clearly pissed. His face is all flushed and his jaw keeps clenching. My floor will be worn out by the end of the night, with the way he’s been stomping on it. And twice I had to stop him from kneading. The poor dough was about to press charges for assault. His stony silence makes me uncomfortable, and I’m not sure what to do about it. Every time I ask him if he’s okay, his voice drops an octave. Pretty soon, he’ll be reduced to just grunts.

I begin to wonder if Bo was right. That Maxim saw us today and got jealous. If that’s the reason for his surly mood, he needs to get over it. This childish sulking is starting to get on my nerves. So, I decide to switch things up a bit.

“Okay, Mr. Dufort, this is what’s happening,” I sternly say, shutting off the mixer he’s slowly pouring buttermilk into.

“Hey, you’re going to ruin the cakes,” Maxim argues.

“So you can speak in a complete sentence.” I smirk. “Well, the cakes aren’t your concern…they’re mine. And right now, I’m more focused on what your deal is. Also, before you say ‘nothing,’ I know that’s bullshit. Something is bothering you, so out with it.”

Maxim remains quiet, just staring at the still mixer. I can hear him breathing in and out his nose like a raging bull. Finally, he raises his head and looks me dead in the eyes.

“We do not hold hands with other men, Everette,” he slowly says, his tone low.

Shocked, I laugh—right in his face. Which did not go over well. Maxim’s eyes turn dark as night, and he storms past me towards the door.

“Wait,” I cry out, rushing to stop him from walking out. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. It’s just that… Did you really just say, ‘We do not hold hands with other men, Everette,’” I say, mocking his voice.

“So what if I did? I have to tell you, Everette, it wasn’t exactly a good feeling seeing you there with him. How close you two were. I tried not to let it upset me, but it would seem that I failed.” Maxim looks so sad that I just react, wanting to put that cocky smile I can’t stand back on his face. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I pull his head to mine. My eyes close, and my lips open slightly in anticipation.

“What the hell, Everette?!” Maxim exclaims, pushing me away.
